Maximising Ability: Minimising Disability
Springboard Opportunity Group
Charity Number 1010231 Company Number 2698820
A charity run pre-school providing care for children under 5 with disabilities and special educational needs.
Springboard Opportunity Group provides a high quality care and learning environment for young children with additional needs and their families.
This is achieved by
Valuing all children as unique
Working in partnership with parents and professionals to provide timely and appropriate support
Ensuring that the children access enriched and individualised learning experiences through play
Developing a professionally committed workforce that continues to meet the needs of the children and families
Creating a sustainable and cost – effective approach to service delivery
Accessing high levels of fundraising and charitable donations that support the funding received from Wiltshire Local Authority.Chippenham charity, Springboard Opportunity Group was put into being by a steering committee in 1976 to meet the needs of families with children who had any form of special need, and who required more staff time, stimulation, and understanding than a normal playgroup could offer. Its first home was in the Bridge Centre in Chippenham - parents and children having to negotiate some 15 steps to an upstairs room. It then moved to the Teachers’ Centre where there was a great deal of appropriate space and unfortunately this did not become a permanent home. There followed a trying period in the old kitchens of Westmead School and thereafter a Portacabin in the grounds of Frogwell Hospital, which was our home for 5-6 years. We had an established garden there (which was planned by the Horticultural Therapy Centre) with tunnel, mound, and play areas. In 1989 the Health Authority decided to close Frogwell Hospital and sell the site, so we had to look for a new home.
The Team Leader at the time, Jenny Coates, wanted to see Springboard put on Education land, rather than being transferred to another hospital site. With an enormous amount of dedication and hard work, she got us moved to a plot on Frogwell School site, where we stayed
from August 1990 to September 2010.
Springboard activities became limited by the lack of space at the Frogwell site and Wiltshire Council offered us the exciting possibility of helping to develop and then move to a proposed phase 3 Children’s Centre to be located on the King’s Lodge School site.
During 2009/ 2010, Wiltshire Council, Springboard, the Rise Trust Children’s Centre and Portage worked in partnership to influence the design and development of the new facilities at King’s Rise Children’s Centre.
Springboard moved to King’s Rise Children’s Centre during August 2010 and opened to children and families at the start of the academic year, September 2010. The new purpose built facilities are of an exceptionally high standard and allow greater flexibility in quality service
We intend to create in our centre an environment in which children are safe from abuse, and in which any suspicion of abuse is promptly and appropriately responded to.
All safeguarding procedures are in line with the Wiltshire Safeguarding Children's Board http://www.proceduresonline.com/swcpp/wiltshire/index.html
